Thousands of Veterans Still Affected TodayIn the summer of 1973, the six-story National Personnel Record Center in St. Louis employed about 2,200 people. They were charged with maintaining and protecting 38 million sensitive military personnel records. At sixteen minutes and fifteen seconds after midnight on July 12, an alarm sounded at a nearby firehouse. The first fire trucks arrived on the scene within minutes, but the blaze on the top floor of the six-story building was already raging out of control. Forty-two fire districts eventually responded and fought the fire for nearly four days before finally stowing their hoses and returning to their home districts. They were able to contain the fire to the sixth floor and no lives were lost, but what remained of the 200,000-square foot area was a sodden, smoldering swamp of burnt and waterlogged records. An estimated 16 to 18 million personnel files-the military life histories of America's warriors--were lost. Typical records contained...

Here's What Can Happen when You Don't Waste Your Money on a MilitaryHaving lived in a country, the USA, which has the largest military in the world and spends more money on its military than half of the world's other countries combined, I'm fascinated by countries that don't have an army. In America, people think you must have a military to survive. Well, people in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, and Andorra don't seem to think so - and they've survived more well enough. In fact, these countries are some of the healthiest and wealthiest in the world.Iceland is a member of NATO yet has not had an army since 1869. They did have a combined US-Great Britain military force until 2006, when the last of the US troops pulled out, but they don't deem it necessary to spend the money on a military. They were invaded by the British during the Second World War, but only as an attempt by the British to make sure Iceland wasn't invaded by Germany. The last wars Iceland was involved in were the Cod...

The South Vietnamese Army had proven ineffective against the Vietcong busy attacking American bases. That is when the United States Marines were dispatched to deal with the problem of security in South Vietnam. This was the start of the American ground war which was on March 8, 1965. But before then, the U.S Air Force had to try and weaken some of the resolve of the Vietcong in their home territory. The Operation known as Flaming Dart was a military operation conducted in two parts during the Vietnam Conflict in 1965. After a string of attacks conducted by the National Liberation Front militia units on United States military bases, United States President Lyndon Baines Johnson decided to order a series of reprisal air strikes. It was among some of the first military operations in the Vietnam War.On January 31, 1965, orders were issued to the 18th TAC Fighter Squadron located in Okinawa, not far from Japan, to become mobile and head to Danang Air Force Base. Later at Kadena Air Force...

The global market for tactical radios is strong is and expected to show substantial growth in the coming years. Factors that have contributed to the massive rise in demand for tactical radios are increased wars and terrorist threats that have created a need to equip the armed forces with modern radios. The US led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have amply demonstrated the significance of communication and information technologies for the success of military campaigns. Further, armed forces of major countries are now slowly absorbing more and more technology in the process of modernization of their defense equipments. Most of the country's defense forces have started investing heavily in modernizing their communications networks by adopting several new technologies.Secondly, the schedule and performance problems associated with the next-generation radio program, Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) has driven a need for legacy radios to fill the gap.Legacy tactical radios include handheld radios,...

If you experience "mind fog" after watching television, you are not alone. Studies have shown that watching television induces low alpha waves in the human brain. Alpha waves are brainwaves between 8 to 12 HZ. and are commonly associated with relaxed meditative states as well as brain states associated with suggestibility. While Alpha waves achieved through meditation are beneficial (they promote relaxation and insight), too much time spent in the low Alpha wave state caused by TV can cause unfocussed daydreaming and inability to concentrate. Researchers have said that watching television is similar to staring at a blank wall for several hours.. I enjoy watching television on occasion, and this article is not meant to suggest that people should never watch TV. However, it is only fair that people understand what happens to the brain each time it is exposed to television. In an experiment in 1969, Herbert Krugman monitored a person through many trials and found that in less than one...
